A raised wood deck under a timber pergola, giving dappled shade over the patio door and a frame for plants and lights.
The project
Shade where it matters most.
The deck sat right outside a sunny patio door, and by mid-afternoon it was too hot to use. The homeowners wanted shade without closing in the space.
We built a raised wood deck and a timber pergola above it, with posts carried down to their own footings and rafters spaced for filtered shade. The open roof lets snow fall through in winter.
Climbing plants and string lights have since made it the most-used spot in the yard.
