Cost & quotes
How much does a deck cost in Ottawa?
Most new decks we build in Ottawa land between about $40 and $120 per square foot installed, depending on material, height, railings and site conditions. A typical 300 sq ft composite deck is roughly $19,500 to $30,000. Try our cost estimator for a ballpark.
Are your quotes really free?
Yes. The on-site visit and your itemized, written quote are free with no obligation. Most quotes arrive within 24 hours of the visit.
Why do deck quotes vary so much between companies?
Usually because they're not quoting the same deck. Footing depth, joist spacing, railing type, permits and cleanup are often left vague. Our quotes list every line item so you can compare fairly.
Permits & planning
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Ottawa?
Often, yes. The City of Ottawa generally requires a building permit for decks more than 60 cm (about 2 ft) above the ground, and some covered or attached decks need one regardless of height. We confirm the requirements for your property and handle the drawings and permit application for you.
How close to my property line can I build?
That depends on your zoning and the deck's height. Setbacks apply even to low decks that don't need a permit. We check your zoning before we design anything.
When is the best time to book a deck?
Late fall and winter. Quotes signed early get first pick of spring build dates, and there's time for permits to come through before the season starts.
Materials
Composite, PVC or wood: which is best for Ottawa winters?
Pressure-treated wood and cedar cost the least up front but need staining every few years. Composite and PVC cost more but won't rot, splinter or need staining, and they handle freeze-thaw cycles and snow well. We walk you through swatches and the long-term cost of each.
What railing options do you offer?
Wood, aluminum picket, glass and cable railings. Aluminum is the most popular for low upkeep; glass is best when you want an open view.
Can you match my existing deck or house colours?
Usually, yes. We bring board and railing swatches to your consultation so you can compare them against your siding, brick and window frames.
Process & timing
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most residential decks take 3 to 7 working days on site once materials arrive. Larger multi-level decks, covered decks and pergolas can take two weeks or more. Permit timing is separate, and we give you a realistic schedule with your quote.
Can you repair or replace my existing deck?
Yes. We repair rotted boards, stairs and railings, and we can re-deck over a sound frame. If the structure has reached the end of its life, we tear it out, haul it away and build new, and we tell you honestly which option makes sense.
Do I need to be home during the build?
No. We just need access to the yard and an outdoor power outlet. We'll check in daily by text and walk you through the finished deck at the end.
Which areas do you serve?
We build decks across Ottawa, including Stittsville, Kanata, Carp, Richmond, Riverside South, Manotick, Greely, Barrhaven, Orleans and Findlay Creek. Not on the list? Call or text and ask.
Warranty & insurance
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Every deck comes with a written 5-year workmanship warranty, on top of the manufacturer's warranty on composite and PVC boards, which is often 25 years or more. See our warranty page for details.
Are you insured?
Yes. Ryan's carries full liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and we're happy to provide certificates before any work starts.
